The Other Side of Development: A Case Study of ACC Cement Factory in Himachal Pradesh (India)

The present paper focuses on the other side of the development, based on the findings from the empirical study of ACC cement factory at Barmana situated in the lower shivalik Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh. Like other developmental activities, this activity also ignores the ecological and environment concerns of the local area and disturb physical, socio- cultural as well as non-material environment of the area. This area is surrounded by Kol Dam, Dehar Hydel Electric Power Projects and Govind Sagar Lake, which are sufficient to create havoc anytime in this area. It is high time to check all such type of developmental activities by adopting human and environmental friendly technology. Development should be for man; man should not be for the development.
