Announcement: Workshop on Adaptation for Water Sector in Sub-Saharan Africa

The Nairobi based Utafiti Centre for Research and Technology will hold a training workshop for technical, administrative and political officers in municipal and government agencies on 'Challenges in Water Provisioning in the Global South'. The training will be conducted by lecturers from Nairobi, Kenyatta and Makerere Universities, and will be held from 26th to 30th March, 2012 in Nairobi.
The major objective of the workshop is to bridge science (research) with water service providers (central governments, municipal water agencies, NGO/Projects and Community water stakeholders) onto a common platform for sharing latest information and knowledge on adaptation for the water sector. The course is designed with the current reality in the region (water stress and scarcity) and projected changes in climate and attendant impacts on the water sector. Basic tools and methodologies for effective adaptation will be shared, including use
of market based tools for adaptation financing. The workshop is being seen as vital in highlighting the important role of municipal and other agencies in taking a lead in spatially differentiated watershed conservation to drive adaptation to climate change in water provision programs. A one day field visit to a successful project where this is being implemented.
A major outcome will be the establishment of a knowledge sharing community for relevant stakeholders in Sub-Saharan Africa to address information gaps, develop pilot projects and share expertise in adaptation design and scaling. The community can develop and share resources that are relevant and within context for use in the region, especially targeted to address the much talked about low adaptive capacity facing African governments, municipal authorities and other organizations. More information can be obtained by sending an email to info@utafiti.org. Further details on the workshop can be found on www.utafiti.org.
