Caucasus

The Caucasus Mountains stretch over 1000 km from West to East (from the Black Sea coast to the Caspian Sea) and 300 km from North to South. The highest mountain is Mt. Elbrus (5642m), the highest peak in the European continent. Another eight mountain peaks rise above 5000m.

Because of its rich and diverse landscapes and biodiversity, the Caucasus has been identified by UNEP as one of the most important hot spots of biodiversity worldwide.

The territorial entities of the Caucasus region are Georgia, Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Armenia, the Southwest part of Russian Federation and the Northeast part of Turkey.

Historically, the Caucasus is the natural dividing line between Asia and Europe, and therefore combines different futures of culture and nature heritage. The spiritual and cultural value of mountains for the nations of the Caucasus is hard to overestimate. In many beliefs, religions and community rules, the mountains still symbolize the beauty of universe and the spirit of humanity. Therefore, despite the geographical isolation and barriers, the mountains of the Caucasus unite peoples with different religions and origins.
