Side Event: Mountain knowledge solutions for sustainable green economy and improved water, food, energy, and environment nexus

Venue: P3-A, RioCentro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

GWP Executive Secretary Dr Ania Grobicki will be a speaker at the side event that highlighting the need to better manage mountain natural resources as global public goods supplying water for life, food for health and clean energy for livelihoods. The side event is organized by International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) together with Government of Nepal; Mountain Partnership Secretariat; Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI); Ev-K2-CNR; Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA) and Global Water Partnership (GWP).

The expected outputs and outcomes are to share knowledge and good practice and commit to specific sustainable mountain solutions; energize on the nexus between water, food, energy an environment post Rio+20; identify green economy actions in and beyond mountains and commitment of knowledge management actions to implement the new mountain agenda.

Side Event: Dublin Rio Principles - Bridging the Gender Gap in Water Resource Management – Where do we stand, what lessons have we learned?

Venue: P3-6 RioCentro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

GWP Executive Secretary Dr Ania Grobicki and Dr Mercy Dikito-Wachtmeister, GWP Senior Officer Global Initiatives will speak and participate in a high-level panel on gender. The side event is organized by GWP, with Dr Mercy Dikito-Wachtmeister as a coordinator, together with African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW); United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); Water Research Commission of South Africa, International Network for Capacity Building in Sustainable Water Management (Cap-Net), South Asia Consortium for Interdisciplinary Water Resources Studies (SaciWATERs), The Public Health Institute (PHI) Center for Public Health and Climate Change and the Gender and Water Alliance (GWA).

This event seeks to influence the Rio outcomes and implementation as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post 2012 MDGs. It also contributes to the Gender and Sustainable Development RIO+20 commitments. It will facilitate information exchange on gender strategies, actions, and lessons learned, on gender mainstreaming in water resources management throughout the world. The event also seeks to share knowledge and support for the implementation of the African Minister’s Council on Water (AMCOW) gender strategy. We will explore the development of an Africa Network that will support AMCOW and provide a global model to bring these issues forward beyond RIO+20.

Sustainable Development Dialogues: Panel on Water

GWP Executive Secretary Dr Ania Grobicki is invited by the Brazilian government to speak at the Dialogue Panel on Water which will be broadcast live. The recommendations coming out of the Dialogues will be transmitted directly to the roundtables of Heads of State and Government.

Side Event: Challenges and Opportunities for a Mediterranean Green Growth

Vangelis Constantianos, GWP Med Regional Coordinator has coordinated the side event and Dr Mohamed Ait Kadi, GWP Technical Committee Chair will participate in the event. The co-organizers is The Mediterranean Information Office for the Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE), UNEP Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP), Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Secretariat, Commission of the European Union (DGs: Environment, EuropeAid Development and Cooperation, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries), Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco and Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED).

This side event will bring together the major institutions and stakeholders from European, Western Asian and North African countries to provide an overview of the joint efforts of strengthened cooperation, common vision and shared strategies towards achieving sustainable development. Under the light of a growing financial volatility, the new realities following the Arab Spring, and taking into consideration the emerging challenges (Integration, Implementation, Coherence) the event aspires to renew the political

commitment on a realistic basis in an eco-region located at the North-South interface, facing serious demographic, economic, environmental, technological and socio-cultural problems

GWP Chair Dr Letitia A Obeng will be a Moderator at a high-level panel on the importance of regional cooperation as an effective way of delivering sustainable development and bridging between national action and global commitments. The side event is organized by German CBSS presidency. The side event will focus on how regional cooperation can deliver sustainable development and act as bridge between national actions and global commitments. The side event will also highlight some successful projects for cross-sectorial and integrated approaches to sustainable development as well as launch a publication on key messages on green economy.

Side Event: Climate Compatible Development for Sustainability & Climate Security

Dr Mohamed Ait-Kadi, GWP Technical Committee Chair will be a panellist at the side event “Climate Compatible Development for Sustainability & Climate Security” arranged by Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano (FFLA) Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), global alliance with six partners (FFLA, ODI, SSN, LEAD, INTRAC, PWC). The event is a high level debate on the climate security agenda in the Amazon and worldwide, focusing on ways in which Climate Compatible Development can reduce the threats that climate change poses on water, energy, and food security, and ecosystems resilience. This event will offer

the perspective of developing countries on the topic, and will contribute to the debate around strategies and plans for reaching sustainable development, and will be focused on priority thematic areas of the UNCSD: energy, water, and food security. The side event will be moderated by Ms. Yolanda Kakabadse, President of WWF global; and Regional Director of CDKN.

Side Event: Water Cooperation

Venue: P3-E, RioCentro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

GWP Chair Dr Letitia A Obeng will be a speaker at the Side Event on Water Cooperation arranged by the Government of Tajikistan in cooperation with other UN Member States and the UN-Water. The event will be an important step for the whole range of activities during the International Year of Water Cooperation, which was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly resolution 65/154 by the initiative of Tajikistan, since such it will provide a unique opportunity for the Member States and United Nations institutions to discuss water cooperation issues at high level.
