Session on sustainable monitoring programmes at the Meeting of the Americas, Cancún - Mexico (May 2013)

A session titled “Networks for Sustainable Monitoring of Global Environmental Change” is being organized by CONDESAN, with support from the Mountain Research Institute. The session looks to use case studies of ongoing monitoring networks in global environmental change, showing how the role of networks has been important in their organization and how their results have been applied to decision making.
Monitoring of global environmental change in mountains is crucial to decision-making within adaptive management systems, for example, with relation to water management, biodiversity conservation or for improving livelihoods. Mountain social and ecological systems are especially vulnerable to global changes, including climate change and land use change, and their populations therefore stand to benefit from improved ways of gathering and making environmental and social information available over the long term. Networks here can play a significant role in making monitoring systems more sustainable, given that there is agreement over the type and format of data to be collected.
The session, chaired by Mathias Vuille of University at Albany SUNY, will take place within the Meeting of the Americas of the American Geophysical Union, from 14-17 May 2013 in Cancún, Mexico. The session is scheduled for Tuesday May 14, between 4:00 and 6:00 pm in the Salon Cozumel 1 (Cancun Center). For further information contact Christian.Devenish@condesan.org
