Rio+20 Mountain Pavilion will host an important meeting on mountain sustainable development

On Saturday June 16, Mountain Pavilion, located on the Athlete’s Park will be hosting an important summit on sustainable development on mountains, and will receive representatives from different nations across the region.

The activity hosted by CONDESAN and the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) seeks to address the challenges and opportunities to include the results of scientific research on mountain regions into the sustainable development policies, with emphasis on environmental monitoring.

According to the meeting’s document, there has been a large growth on sustainable development policies as well as attempts to comply with the Rio accords. However, concrete results are not as good as expected.

Some of the questions that will be raised on the initial debate are, Do we understand well enough mountain ecosystems when looking to the future? What do policy makers expect from research on mountain regions in order to create effective sustainable development policies? Are the priorities of policy makers in tune with the ones of scientific researchs?

The meeting will be from 1 pm to 3 pm on the Athlete’s Park
