Rio+20. Bringing Climate Finance to Grassroots Women – What does it take?

Bringing Climate Finance to Grassroots Women – What does it take?

WHEN: Sunday, June 17th, from 5:30 – 7 pm
WHERE: UN2, Barra Arena, Rio de Janeiro

Women in many countries are disproportionally affected by climate change impacts, with many women in developing countries hit the worst.  They have different experiences, knowledge and capabilities from men which are instrumental for effective action on improving climate resilience, safeguarding forest stocks and reducing mitigation.  In many cases, grassroots women in developing countries have taken action with community-based action, providing leadership,  initiative and innovation.

This panel is looking at the obstacles in the current climate finance architecture of existing funding instruments that prevent a wider and better support of concrete climate actions by grassroots women in developing countries, both ongoing and future ones.  What steps are necessary – political, operational, financial and social – to overcome these hurdles?  What role do providers of public climate finance have to play in ensuring sufficient funding and an enabling regulatory and organizational environment?  What role can not-for-profit civil society organizations and philanthropic foundations play?  Is there a role for the private sector?
