New Publication: "Cooperation: the key to a water secure future"

Global Water Partnership (GWP) launched of a new publication, Water: catalyst for cooperation, profiling 15 water co-operation initiatives developed by GWP and its Regional and Country Water Partnerships across the world.
Water does not flow according to the boundaries created by nations, regions and communities. Moreover, water is a finite resource; what we have now is all we will ever have. And for the first time in history, global demand is beginning to outstrip supply. This means that water is a resource that has to be shared. To do that requires cooperation. Cooperation can both prevent and solve problems.
A finite natural resource under increasing pressure
- Water use has been increasing globally at more than twice the rate of population increase in the last century, and an increasing number of regions are reaching the limit at which water services can be sustainably delivered.
- Water demand could outstrip supply by up to 40% by 2030.
- Water availability is threatened further by increasing frequency of climate change related extreme weather events such as floods and droughts; the cultivation of crops for bio-energy; and an increasing demand for a water-intensive diet as living standards rise across the globe.
- By 2025, 1,800 million people are expected to be living in countries or regions with “absolute” water scarcity and two-thirds of the world populatuon could be under “stress” conditions.
- This in turn threatens food and energy security, and economic development, and will lead to the decline of freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity.
