Mountain Research and Development, Volume 31, Issue 3 available online and open access

Three papers in the newest issue of MRD focus on water resources and water management issues in the Indus Basin—one of the largest watersheds in the world, with well over 200 million people in the lower basin depending on the water from headwaters shared by China, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Drafts of these papers were presented at an international multistakeholder expert consultation convened by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in July 2010. MRD is hoping to publish additional papers from this Indus Basin consultation early next year.

Further papers in MRD 31.3 focus on other natural resources in mountains around the world, on their dynamics, on the impact of human use and human needs on these resources, and on conservation issues. Read about collection and processing of a medicinal plant in the Western Himalaya, the response of rare wild ungulates to use of pastures in Nanda Devi BR, the analysis of a timberline species in the Western Tatra Mountains, and snow-making in Swiss Alpine winter resorts; an additional paper in the MountainNotes section discusses conservation of “plant museums” and “plant cradles” in Western China. The MountainPlatform by ICIMOD reflects on the state of the “mountain agenda” in this preparatory phase preceding Rio+20. The issue is completed by interesting reviews of books on mountain topics.
