IPROMO Course on "Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Management in Mountains"

IPROMO’s theme this year is “Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Management in Mountains” and will focus on specific hazards (slope instabilities and landslides, shallow soil movements, floods including glacial lake outburst floods, wildfires, avalanches and snow hazards and earthquakes) and examples of natural hazard protection (sustainable agriculture, pasture and forestry practices, policies on disaster risk management, early warning systems capacity building and awareness raising) as well as emergency and rehabilitation.

The course will run from 9 to 22 July 2011 with 14 days of full immersion learning. It will include lectures, practical work, labs and field trips. The course will be held in Ormea, Italy (Piedmont Region) with several excursions and field activities.

The IPROMO Programme has been jointly organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat at FAO, UNESCO and the University of Turin, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Protection of Agroforestry Resources; it benefits from the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The course - which will be held in English - will be open to a maximum of 35 professionals who belong to organizations or countries which are members of the Mountain Partnership. Participants from developing countries are encouraged to apply.

The total cost of the course (inclusive of full board, accommodation, taxes, teaching equipment, internal transfers) is 3,000 Euros. A limited number of scholarships – full (on site and travel costs) and partial (on-site only) - are available for selected participants from developing countries.

Excellent knowledge of English, a university degree in a technical area such as Agriculture, Forestry, Biology, Geology or Geography, and relevant working experience on mountain development issues are indispensable prerequisites.

All applications received by 15 March will be considered by the IPROMO organizing committee and a notification will be sent out by mid April to all applicants.
