First Call: Expression of interests for submission of multimedia materials on Mountains and Green Economy

Mountain Forum Bulletin (MF Bulletin 2011)

  • Deadline for expression of interest: 30 September 2011
  • Deadline for submission of Multimedia Materials: October 12th

What is a “Green Economy”?

According to UNEP (2010), a Green Economy is one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.

Why is Green Economy important for Sustainable Development of Mountains?

The June 2012 Earth Summit (Rio+20, http://www.earthsummit2012.org/) includes the concept of ‘green economy’ in the broader context of sustainable development.  The Mountain Chapter of RIO+20 (Chapter 13) focused mainly on improving social-ecological systems and enhancing mountain research, disregarding economic conditions affecting the global community. The international community is therefore now taking the lead to promote the concept of a ‘green economy’ fostering—among others—‘resource efficiency’, ‘internalization of externalities’, ‘valuation of ecosystem services’, ‘sustainable production and consumption patterns’, 'cleaner energy' and ‘low-carbon economy’.

The new MF Bulletin as a tool for an international campaign on Green Economy and Mountains

To raise awareness of the importance of mountainous areas in a Green Economy context, and also to provide concrete examples of how the world's mountain regions are contributing to the green economy, several members of the Mountain Partnership have agreed to join efforts to produce the annual issue of the Mountain Forum Bulletin. This issue will be dedicated to the theme of 'Mountains and the Green Economy' and will be coordinated under the lead of the Consortium for Sustainable Development of the Andes (CONDESAN). It will include a compilation of contributions covering different aspects related to a Green Economy in various mountain regions from around the world. The publication will include articles and images, as well as video clip. This issue of the Mountain Forum Bulletin will be available in its new format by the end of November 2011, (Vol XI Issue).

As a joint effort of CONDESAN, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, UNEP, ICIMOD, UCA, MRD and MRI, the 2011 issue of the MF Bulletin will be published in Web 2.0 format and mini-CD format for mass dissemination.

It will include the following sections:

  1. I.         Introduction to the Theme
  2. II.        Mountain Facts
  3. III.      Key issues: Mountain and Green Economy
  4. IV.     Towards RIO+20
