Experiences in Climate Change Adaptation Management in the Andes of Peru

The effects of climate change impose new and additional challenges for the mountain context, both for natural and human systems. Changes in precipitation regimes, glacial retreat and alteration of ecosystem composition and its structure, among other climate change related effects, together with persistent degradation of the environment, land use change, deforestation and unsustainable natural resource extraction, adversely affect the provision of vital goods and services for mountain population and national production systems; increasing also the risks of disasters.
Peru, an important Andean mountain country, home to over 70% of the world's tropical glaciers, is a highly vulnerable country to climate change, not only due to structural drivers such as poverty and inequality, but also due to expected impacts on ecosystems of global importance, such as glaciers.
In this context the Ministry of the Environment of Peru and the Swiss Cooperation for Development, aiming to share the progress on adaptation to climate change; both from the State and the Civil Society in the country, showing the essential that is the thematic, technological, financial and institutional support for effective climate change adaptation in mountains, presenting the main challenges and lessons learned for climate change daptation management in the Peruvian Andes, encouraging dialogue and reflection.
