Call for Papers: Innovations in Water Policy (26-28 Feb 2013)

The Institute of Water Policy is inviting submissions of paper proposals for a workshop on water policy analysis, hosted by the Institute of Water Policy at the National University of Singapore.

The workshop will follow a small-group format that will enable in-depth discussion of current water policy issues, research design, and empirical research methods. We would be delighted also to discuss collaborative research opportunities.

We have chosen three themes for the workshop, each reflecting an area of research in which the Institute of Water Policy will be engaging in the years ahead:

1) Demand Management
We seek topics on financial and non-financial incentives to motivate improvements in water management and wiser use of water and other natural resources. Innovative methodologies of researching water demand management are also welcome.

2) Impact Assessment
We seek submissions on empirical evaluation of water policies and programs, using rigorous analytical methods, such as propensity score matching, differences in differences, and randomized controlled trials.

3) Improving Access to Water and Sanitation for the Poor
Papers on methodologies to improve access to water and sanitation for the poor are welcome. We aim to have lively discussions on water and sanitation access for empowering communities, enhancing livelihoods and improving health and welfare in developing and middle-income countries.

In addition to providing a forum for exciting discussion, we plan also to prepare a special issue of a journal or a high-quality edited book, in which we would publish several papers arising from the workshop. Success will be determined by the number and quality of papers we receive from the invited speakers.

We will cover the lodging, meals, and incidental expenses for all selected participants. We will also consider providing airfare for those speakers who are unable to attend without such support. Given that we have limited resources for producing the workshop, we hope that a good portion of the speakers will be able to attend without requiring support for their airfare.

Each selected participant will be expected to give a 15-minute presentation in which they stimulate discussion of a topic of their interest, within one or more of the central themes of the workshop. Following each presentation, we would ask a discussant to give a 5-minute presentation, followed by about 40 minutes of discussion. We would ask each presenter to provide an annotated outline of their presentation about 2 weeks in advance of the workshop, so that we may produce a full guide of the presentations for distribution to participants at the start of the event.

Please submit your paper proposals – consisting of a title, an abstract (200 words), and a short bio (50 words) – to iwpevents@nus.edu.sg by 7 December 2012. Selected participants will be notified by 15 December 2012.
