Australian Alps Cooperative Management Program
Stretching from Canberra through the Brindabella Range in the ACT, the Snowy Mountains of NSW and along the Great Divide through Victoria, the alpine and subalpine environment is a unique part of Australia, a mountainous biogeographical region in a predominantly dry and flat continent.
Comprising over 1.6 million-hectares of protected areas, the national parks and reserves in the Australian Alps cross State and Territory borders.
Eleven conservation reserves are collectively referred to as the ‘Australian Alps national parks’. The major reserves, Kosciuszko, Namadgi, Alpine, Mount Buffalo and Baw Baw national parks are well known too much of the community of south-eastern Australia.
A tri-state cooperative management program for the Australian Alps, administered by the Australian Alps Liaison Committee (AALC), seeks to achieve excellence in conservation management and sustainable use through a strong program of cross-border cooperation.
