Adaptation And Risk Reduction-IISD Publications

IISD: Reports summarizing the risks associated with climate variability and change in selected sectors, ecosystems and/or regions in three African and four Latin American and Caribbean countries are now available.
African reports:
- Kenya: Climate risk management for malaria control in Kenya: the case of the western Kenyan highlands
- Niger: Sustainable wetland management in the face of climate risks in Niger: the case of La Mare de Tabalak
- Uganda: Climate risk management for sustainable crop production in Uganda: Rakai (southwest) and Kapchorwa (east) districts
Latin America and the Caribbean reports:
- Dominican Republic: Climate Risk Management for Water and Agriculture in the Yaque del Sur Watershed
- Honduras: Climate Risk Management for Smallholder Agriculture
- Nicaragua: Climate Risk Management in the Health Sector
- Peru: Climate Risk Management for Agriculture in the Regions of Junín and Piura
Prepared by IISD, the reports draw upon our innovative and tailored approach to climate risk management, which was applied by IISD and our partners as part of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP’s) Climate Risk Management Technical Assistance Support Project.
- A new version of CRiSTAL, a decision-support tool to help users design climate adaptation activities at the community level, has been released by IISD in partnership with IUCN, SEI, and Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation. Updates include making the tool available as a desktop application; increased attention to gender and equity issues; addition of a module on designing and evaluating new project activities; and improved guidance on data and information collection for each step. The updated tool and accompanying revised user’s manual were developed between 2010 and 2012 based on extensive user feedback and field tests.
Recent Publications
- Capacity Assessment and Awareness Raising on Climate Change in Tajikistan
A paper written by IISD project manager Livia Bizikova has been published by the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program. The report presents findings from a series of five Participatory Scenario Development sessions held to build capacity on climate change adaptation and validate and augment plans for Tajikistan’s Strategic Program for Climate Resilience (SPCR). It is one of the outputs of Phase I of the Pilot Programme for Climate Resilience (PPCR) in Tajikistan. - CRiSTAL Stories: CRiSTAL helps farmers adapt to drought on the slopes of Mount Elgon, Uganda
In this CRiSTAL Stories brief, Julie Karami (IISD) and Sophie Kutegeka (IUCN-Uganda) document how the application of the Community-Based Risk Screening Tool— Adaptation and Livelihoods (CRiSTAL) framework in Sansaza parish, Eastern Uganda, led to the development of a community-driven water gravity flow scheme for irrigation. The scheme will help people adapt to prolonged dry spells—a trend that may increase in the context of climate change. Other outcomes of the CRiSTAL process include: the development of a common understanding of the climate issues, increased cohesion among local actors and increased support for climate adaptation in the area from external agencies. - CRiSTAL Stories: CRiSTAL Supports Climate-Resilient Development in the Peruvian Andes
In this CRiSTAL Stories brief, Marius Keller (IISD) and Tatiana Farfán de la Vega (CARE-Peru) document how application of the CRiSTAL framework in the municipality of Santa Teresa, in the Cusco region of Peru, led local communities to identify a range of climate and gender-sensitive adaptation measures, in line with local culture and traditions. Continuous engagement of local government in the CRiSTAL process further contributed to the inclusion of climate adaptation into local development plans, which has now been replicated in the surrounding municipalities.
