1. INTRODUCTION:
Conservation, management and utilization of biological resources, which are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive, need due attention so that the living planet can be protected for our future generations. The International Conference on Himalayan Biodiversity (ICHB-2002) is being organized by Himalayan Resources Institute (HIRI) in collaboration with Biodiversity Research Group (BRG), Central Department of Zoology, Tribhuvan University, The Ecological Association of Nepal (ECOAN) and Nepal Biotechnology Association (NBA) to be held on Dec. 10-13, 2002 in Kathmandu, Nepal on the auspicious occasion of the International Year of Mountains (IYM), 2002 and the International Year of Eco-tourism-2002. The conference aims to point out the unsustainable approach of natural resource management including, specifically, Himalayan Flora and Fauna, Biodiversity Conservation, Trade Related Property Rights (TRIPs.) and Eco-tourism in relation to human welfare will be explored. The conference will bring together various related aspects viz education, research, development, policy, production, processing, marketing, economics, energy and environment. It will provide an opportunity to interact and exchange ideas amongst innovative grass root farmers, green entrepreneurs, scientists, academicians, policy makers, social organizers, environmentalists and industrialists for evolving practical solutions for the conservation and management of the Himalayan biodiversity.

Alternatively, you may pre-register electronically from the conference homepage at http://www.hirinepal.com. This ensures that you will receive the Final Announcement containing detail conference information. Registration fee should be sent in favour of Himalayan Resources Institute (HIRI) as a demand draft. Provide following information in the pre-registration form:

6. PROGRAMMES:
There will be four categories of presentation, namely:
Plenary and invited lectures will be distributed in all the sub-themes, and the selected speakers will be invited for the presentation. The poster session will be reviewed and presented by the conveners in the last session in a summarized form.
7. EXCURSION:
On Dec. 13, 2002 Post-Conference excursions to Daman Mountains Botanical Garden (DMBG), Royal Botanical Garden, Godavari, Royal Chitwan National Park (RCNP) and other places in Nepal will be arranged on participants' request. Further information about excursions will be provided in the second circular.
8. EXHIBITION:
Various books and reference materials related to biodiversity will be displayed at conference hall.
