The CMW event in Chambéry, France, will be on 30/31st May. It is the CMW Preparatory Meeting for CMW Meeting in Bhutan. This event is organised by the European Mountain Forum, Montanea and the city of Chambéry, french IYM 2002 focal point, and in collaboration with ICIMOD and the Mountain Forum.

The CMW Preparatory Meeting will elaborate the priorities which will be discussed in CMW Meeting in Bhutan and will provide inputs for each of them. We will open a consultation on the mf-women discussion list a week before CMW Preparatory Meeting in Chambéry, France. So, those of you who won't be able to attend it will have the possibility to send their comments and points they would like to highlight. This meeting is essential for the success of CMW, so all of you who would like to attend it or send inputs are welcome.

A main issue of the CMW Preparatory Meeting is also to present clearly what are the situations of european mountain women in view to add this approach in CMW in Bhutan and then help for the establishment of the "Declaration of Thimphu", which will be presented in BGMS, at the end of october 2002.

La montagne fut placée sur l'agenda international lors de la Conférence des Nations Unies de 1992 sur l'Environnement et le Développement (UNCED) à Rio de Janeiro. En 1995, la Conférence Mondiale des Nations Unies sur les Femmes à Pékin a appelé à une attention particulière sur les Femmes de la Montagne.

Lors de la rencontre du Conseil Forum Montagne à Cusco, au Pérou, en l'an 2000, il a été décidé d'organiser une réunion globale " Célébrons le Rôle de la Femme en Montagne " en 2002, avec le support de l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour l'Alimentation et l'Agriculture (FAO) et du Programme des Nations Unies pour les Femmes (UNIFEM) pour actualiser la situation de la femme à l'occasion de l'AIM 2002.

Chambéry, point focal français pour l'AIM 2002, accueillera une Réunion Internationale les 30 et 31 Mai 2002 qui sera préparatoire à la réunion finale " Célébrons le Rôle de la Femme en Montagne " ayant lieu à Thimphu, Bhutan, du 14 au 19 octobre 2002. Ces réunions sont supportées et organisées par le Forum Européen de la Montagne (FEM) et la ville de Chambéry en France et par le Centre International pour le Développement Intégré de la Montagne (ICIMOD) au Bhutan.

L'initiative " Célébrons le Rôle de la Femme en Montagne " souhaite placer le rôle des femmes de montagne dans le cadre de l'Agenda 21 : les femmes détiennent des positions clé dans l'économie, l'environnement, la sécurité alimentaire et l'éducation. Elle soulignera ces rôles fondamentaux et contribuera à la solidarité et à l'affirmation d'une identité collective grâce à la mise en commun d'expériences et de témoignages des montagnes du monde. Les deux rencontres internationales seront orientées sur cinq thèmes principaux : Ressources Naturelles et Environnement, Santé et bien être, Entreprise, Politique, droits de l'homme et législation et enfin Culture et savoir traditionnel.

Les résultats attendus de la Réunion Préparatoire à Chambéry, France sont de deux types :

• la préparation des priorités à traiter lors de la Réunion Internationale qui aura lieu au Bhutan. Cette préparation utilisera les résultats d'une consultation électronique qui fournira à la Réunion Préparatoire les commentaires et thèmes prioritaires des femmes qui ne pourront pas être présentes à Chambéry.
• l'apport de contributions européennes à " Célébrons le Rôle de la Femme en Montagne " au Bhutan.

Des femmes de montagne, des entrepreneurs dans le domaine de la montagne, des ONGs, des officiers gouvernementaux " senior ", des agences de financement et des représentants médias seront présents à la Réunion Internationale " Célébrons le Rôle des Femmes en Montagne " de Thimphu. Des participants de plus de 25 pays représentant ainsi les principaux types de montagne dans le monde, en particulier les populations marginalisées, sont attendus à la rencontre. Enfin, dans le cadre d'un échange constructif, les aspects pratiques de la vie à la montagne seront mis à la lumière à travers une série de chansons, d'histoires, de danses, mais également à travers l'alimentation, les tenues vestimentaires et les connaissances traditionnelles.

L'objectif final des deux réunions est l'apport d'un message spécifique sur l'importance du rôle des femmes en montagne à la Conférence Mondiale de Bichkek Kirghizstan clôturant l'AIM 2002.
