The Event

The main event is composed of an interactive videoconference on the topics which best express the value and significance of the mountains and the people who live and frequent them. It will be organized and simultaneously transmitted from the places most representative of the populations living around each continent's highest peak.

The world's mountains and the people that live them will be celebrated during High Summit 2002. This unique event, designed to attract the attention of the world's most important international institutions, offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity for progress and communication.

The Means

Global videoconferencing technology will be the vehicle for a worldwide exchange of information and results, uniting the populations living at the base of each continent's highest mountain. In addition, direct interaction between representatives of modern society's most important organizations, governmental bodies and institutions of the human community, such as the UN and the FAO will be made possible.

Knowledge and the sharing of information are key elements of the event. Via direct, interactive connections cultural centers, universities, research institutions and academies worldwide will become not only witnesses to the discussion, but also active participants.

Representatives of each of the 7 of the world's "rooftops" will take turns chairing the videoconference during the first five days of operations. Aside from coordinating the discussions, the acting chairman will have full opportunity to share information regarding the realty of life in his or her mountain region. The sixth day will be set aside for elaborating the formal results of the discussions. Official documents which propose outlines for commitments to support the protection and development of mountain environments and peoples will be drafted and signed.
