CMW Activities

From October 1-4, 2002, the following activities will take place at CMW in Thimphu, Bhutan.

Theme Groups

Participants will work in groups on the six themes of the CMW. The goal of these sessions will be to:

  1. Present summaries of the 30 papers commissioned by the CMW Secretariat (on the six themes, focused on the five regions).
  2. Have individuals and organisations share their experiences on research, policy and practice on each of the themes.
  3. Make input into the Thimphu Declaration
  4. Draft recommendations for follow up to the CMW
Each theme group will have a chair that is responsible for ensuring that the goals of the theme sessions are met. Two facilitators and rappatouers will assist the chairpersons. This team will assist in preparing the report of CMW proceedings.

Tents

Tents on the six themes will provide an informal space for sharing, presenting, discussing, networking, all day, throughout the CMW. Some examples of what participants will find in the tents: e-commerce providers, entrepreneurs, storytellers, small business management professionals, etc. Facilitators will staff each tent.

Carnival

All day, throughout the CMW, stalls will be available to showcase mountain related products such as crafts, clothing, foods, medicinal plants, etc. There will also be songs, dances, and a show exhibiting the various costumes of mountain women.

Film/Video Festival

All day, throughout the CMW, a film/video festival on mountain women will be screened. This will be organized by Film South Asia, Himal, a Nepal based media house.

Media

Media outreach will be organised before and during the CMW. At the CMW a team of journalists will produce daily news releases, organise a press conference at the opening and closing of CMW, and liaise with the press. Women's Feature Service (WFS) an India based international news-feature service specialising on reportage of development issues from a gender perspective will handle this. They will collaborate with Kuensel, the Bhutan weekly English language paper, and the Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS), the local radio station.

HIMAL Association will carry coverage in its issue. It will also do a special feature on mountain girls and women in its youth magazine, Wave. (OJ to check)

Mountain costume show

Mountain women will walk a ramp and display their traditional costumes.

Cultural Program

Every evening, songs, dances, and music will serve as a background for participants to network, relax and mingle under the stars.

Documenting the CMW

The process and activities of CMW will be documented. The products will be a print report which will also be available online, a 30-minute video documentary, and profiles of mountain women at CMW will be gathered for a future publication, tentatively titled, "Ordinary-Extraordinary Women."
