"Celebrating Mountain Women" conference
May 28-31, 2002; Kathmandu, Nepal
"Celebrating Mountain Women", part of the celebration of the International Year of Mountains 2002, will highlight the critical role that mountain women play in their communities, societies, national economies, and environments. As part of the 25th Annual Appalachian Studies Conference, people interested in issues affecting women in Appalachia will gather to prepare their ideas, experiences, and inputs to the global conference. The session is open to all interested participants.
What will we talk about?
We'd like to identify the top issues for Appalachian women as they relate to the following themes:
What resources do we hope to gather?
How will this information be shared?
The information from this session will provide important regional inputs to the global "Celebrating Mountain Women" conference in Kathmandu in May 2002, one of 10 "milestone events" of the UN-declared International Year of Mountains 2002. The information and resources will also be shared and publicized via the Mountain Forum network, a global network of people and organizations supporting mountain environments and communities. Finally, the results of the session will help to form a global statement from mountain women to be presented at the Global Summit on Sustainable Development in South Africa in 2002.
