Coordinator's
note .
In November
1997, and with the publication of this issue of the APMN
Bulletin, APMN completes two years of implementation.
Over the two years of implementation, APMN has come a
long way in meeting the objectives of Sudemma Call to
Action, which, inter alia, called upon countries to place
mountains higher on their sustainable development agendas.
Establishment of the APMN
Subregional focal points; organisation of a regional consultations;
publication of APMN Bulletin(s); initiatives to develop
databases on country mountain profiles and research have
been some of the significant achievements of the APMN.
They have all helped to paved the way to share experiences,
data and information on mountain areas in the Asia Pacific
region.
The APMN Bulletin, in
its initial issues, introduced the mountain community
to the objectives of the Network. The Bulletin has reached
now the stage at which it is mainstreaming information
sharing on sustainable mountain development.
The last issue of the
Bulletin highlighted the APMN Focal Point Coordinators'
First Regional Consultation. The present issue of contains
information that ranges from research, seminar/conference
announcement to the establishment of like-minded organisations,
and APMN's networking with them across Asia and the Pacific.
Tage Michaelsen's speech on the occasion of the release
of the book "Mountains of the World" in late
June, and a cursory review of the book, plus other regular
features make up the contents of this issue of the Bulletin.
In our effort as a mountain
community concerned with addressing issues and raising
awareness, we firmly believe that the continuing publication
of this Bulletin will help us achieve the goal of sustainable
mountain development.
