Adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992, also known as the Rio Earth Summit.
     
2. Paragraph 40 of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation

Protecting and managing the natural resource base for economic and social development

The principles and implementation of Agenda 21 were reaffirmed at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in September 2002. The specific actions to be taken for the preservation and sustainable development of mountain regions are laid out in paragraph 40 of section IV of this document.
     
3. The Bishkek Mountain Platform The document, which is an outcome of the Bishkek Global Mountain Summit, the culminating global event of the International Year of Mountains 2002, provides a framework for action for sustainable mountain development.
     
4. The Thimphu Declaration Some 250 participants from across the globe of the "Celebrating Mountain Women" (CMW) conference held in Paro and Thimphu, Bhutan, between 1-4 October, 2002, issued this declaration focusing on mountain women
